Mission Beach is nearly 2 miles of coastline.  It has sandy beaches, a boardwalk and the amusement park, Belmont Park.  It is only about 15 minutes from the airport and downtown San Diego.  The waves like most of Southern California coastline average from 3 – 5 feet.  This is one of the few beaches with a designated, free public parking lot.  There are numerous fast food restaurants and plenty of  tourist souvenir shops.  Once known as a rowdy, wild bar area, it is now a family type beach during the day.  The previous held reputation receded and it is now well regarded by the locals as a family safe spot.

Mission Beach like many San Diego beaches is not a pet friendly area.  Pets are not allowed during the day.  Only early morning and must be on a leash at all times.

Belmont Park being located here has made this a heavy tourist area.  Visitors will get to see the classic Southern California beach scene while not having to go very far from their hotels.  Locals enjoy the casual laid back atmosphere.  Serious surfers typically avoid it because of the many tourists.  Paddle boarding, bike rentals and long strolls on the boardwalk make Mission Beach a top spot to visit.
